S1E3

Plot

Gelfling bathe Podlings

The Order of Lesser Service bathing Podlings

In the Order of Lesser Service, Brea found herself wearing a clown's hat and being assigned to wash a filthy Podling village. Meanwhile, Seladon ranted in front of Tavra, reassuring herself that the Order of Lesser Service is a worthy punishment for Brea that she needs in order to take her duties seriously. Tavra, typically quiet, caused Seladon to become angry when she wouldn’t agree until she questioned whether it was Brea that Seladon was truly angry with. Although initially denying it, Seladon conceded that it was in fact her mother Mayrin that had her bothered, particularly her "spoiling" of her younger sisters while she worked. They were by a messenger however, and Tavra was called away by Mayrin and sent to hunt down Rian for supposedly murdering a member of the Vapra Clan.

Deet and Rian traveled along different routes to the Stonewood Clan capital, Stone-in-the-Wood, with Deet worried about the darkening and refusing to listen to Hup regarding division amongst the clans. Rian on his route found an overturned cart and helped the two merchants set it right again, but they quickly denounced him when he spoke "heresy" by blaming the Skeksis for Mira's murder, and so he hid his castle guard armaments to prevent detection. Both eventually made their way into the capital.

Tavra came upon Brea en route to hunt Rian, as Brea had became fed up with service work and ran away. Comforting Brea, Tavra supported her decision to leave. She also assured Brea that despite her and their eldest sister Seladon being stubborn, the "bonds of sisterhood" could not be broken.

Entering Stone-in-the-Wood, Deet found herself reviled by everyone she passed, yet she insisted on stopping for a drink. Oblivious to everyone insulting her, Deet sat at the bar despite the locals trying to block the seat, and although she asked them questions, they pretended not to hear her, only to "smell" her supposed wet-fizzgig stench. Jokingly, the locals then pretended to think the Grottans had died out, but when Deet still naïvely tried to ask them questions, their humorous forbearance ran out and they shoved her off of the bar, calling her a "dirty Grottan". Seeing this, Hup became incensed and launched himself over the bar in a flying tackle which left his spoon broken and knocked the two locals aside. Hup then grabs a bigger, stronger spoon and resumes attacking the locals, who then began to retaliate until local guards arrived to imprison Hup.

In skekTek's lab, skekSil tried to intimidate Gurjin into cooperating, but he adamantly refused. Meanwhile, Brea snuck into the Ha'rar library so that she could fly out of the top and toward the palace to retrieve the "brightest jewel" in Mayrin's chambers. In said chambers, Mayrin regretted sending Brea and Tavra away, and tried to postpone holding court for the day until Seladon convinced her to put duty first. As they left, Brea entered and took the "brightest jewel" from the room, hanging on a chandelier, along with her journal.

Gruenak

Gruenaks

Once more in skekTek's lab, skekTek himself continued to work on repairing his machine until skekSil arrived, commenting on skekTek's eye (now replaced with a superior mechanical one) and providing him with "Gruenaks", skilled technical workers originally thought to be eradicated but found by Sifan mariners, as a peace offering. SkekSil even sewed their mouths shut so that they could not share skekTek's secrets, starting to warm skekTek back to skekSil.

In Stone-in-the-Wood, Deet tried and failed to gain an audience with Maudra Fara to release Hup, but is denied as an outlander while Rian was waived directly inside. He presented his evidence, the essence, to Maudra Fara and requested to dreamfast with her, but Ordon had arrived ahead and spread the lie that dreamfasting with Rian resulted in madness. Ordon and the guards attempted to surround and capture Rian, but Rian brought down the light fixtures overhead, entangling the guards and allowing him to escape.

Aughra Crystal past

Aughra talks to herself

At the Castle of the Crystal, Aughra arrived to question the Skeksis on the health of Thra, finding them luxuriating naked in baths or receiving massages. The Skeksis in various degrees awe at her arrival, Aughra dismisses their Podling attendants, unnerves skekOk by putting her eye in his bath, and states her business in checking on the health of the Crystal. SkekZok asserts the Crystal "thrives, as does Thra", skekOk insinuating that Aughra is simply getting old, and skekSo rejecting her request to see the Crystal on the basis of her "abandon(ing)" it. SkekSo then orders her escorted out, but the Gelfling guards are fearful of Aughra, and she makes her way to the Crystal unhindered. Once there, Aughra becomes horrified by the darkened Crystal of Truth, corrupted by Skeksis, and when she asks how she can heal the Crystal a visage of herself, Aughra from a different time, begins speaking to her. The apparition shows Aughra the Skeksis stealing essence, telling her that Gelfling normally return to Thra on death, which cannot happen if they are drained of essence, thus throwing Thra out of balance and accelerating the growth of the darkening. Tasking Aughra with rediscovering the "song of Thra" in order to guide fate, Aughra then departs.

Deet, leaving Stone-in-the-Wood, ended up encountering Rian after feeding some plants. She helped him with a fire using an old Grottan trick, and comforted him despite being seen as a monster despite him being unable to gain her an audience with Maudra Fara. Taking inspiration from one of his phrases, she set out to free.

Brea, jewel in hand, returned to the sea to find Onica just in time, who had been promoted to Elder. Although Brea thought the jewel as payment, Onica chastised her and revealed that it was in fact a chrysalis, a container for an imperial unamoth, the totem animal of the Vapra Clan. Onica sung to it, opening the jewel and allowing the unamoth to lead Brea to the knowledge she sought. The moth and Brea flew away together to the Ha'rar throne room, where the moth activated a secret passage in the throne leading down into a concealed room.
