Plot

SkekMal prepared to cut out Rian's tongue for a trophy until skekSil arrived, claiming to need Rian for his own "hunt" for power, the trophy being a place at Emperor skekSo's side. SkekMal agreed on the condition that he

get Rian's tongue afterward, threatening to kill skekSil if he was denied, at which point skekSil took custody of Rian and skekMal departed. SkekSil then pilfered the last vial of Mira's essence from Rian, who screamed as skekSil drank it and then crushed the vial. Meanwhile, All-Maudra Mayrin discovered numerous Landstriders to have gone insane, releasing one before returning to Ha'rar where skekVar and skekZok waited for her.

Darkening

SkekSo harnesses the Darkening with the Scepter of Office

In the Castle of the Crystal, Naia and Kylan snuck through the passages to rescue Gurjin while Tavra attempted to spy on the Skeksis. Following skekSo, she witnessed him drawing power from the Darkening with the Scepter of Office until she caused a noise and had to flee, and skekSo learned he was being spied upon. At the same time Deet and Hup travelled through the Dark Wood, Hup breaking down over his fear for Deet and his own inability to defend her. Deet reassured him, and they moved on.

Returning to Ha'rar, Mayrin met with skekVar and skekZok, who requested a group of seven volunteers ostensibly to fight an Arathim uprising. In actuality, they intended to drain seven Gelfling from each clan to reach the required 50 Gelfling (including Mira) per trine to achieve immortality. Going the opposite direction, skekSil continued on toward the Castle of the Crystal with Rian in tow, mocking Rian's resistance. The two argued, Rian accusing the Skeksis of evil, while skekSil asked that Rian lie for them, on the basis that they are the same; Skeksis kill to survive, to save themselves, just as Rian ran when Mira was being drained, ran when Gurjin was captured, and allowed his own father Ordon to sacrifice himself so that he might live, saving himself. Ending with the temptation of saving his fellow Gelfling, Rian begins to doubt himself in the face of skekSil's arguments.

Within the Ha'rar throne room, Brea and Seladon had left the hidden chamber as Seladon lambasted Brea for her actions, with Brea accusing Seladon of coveting their mother's throne until Mayrin arrived to break up the fight. Brea convinced Mayrin to at least see Lore, who then sent Seladon away to examine the Landstrider herds.

Rian chooses to stay

Rian is offered freedom, and rejects it

Again with skekSil and Rian however, skekSil continued to pressure Rian into "admitting" that he murdered Mira in order to quell whispers of rebellion and prevent war and save the Gelfling from annihilation. Rian meekly protested that the Skeksis did not care for Gelfling, and although skekSil denied this, Rian said skekSil only cared for Gelfling to be their slaves. SkekSil countered that they were not slaves if they did not think of themselves slaves or realize that they were slaves, as the Gelfling were indeed happy, and although Rian said they were not the Skeksis' pets, skekSil insisted that they were indeed Skeksis' pets, living only a few trine and then dying while the Skeksis endured forever, that Gelfling were to Skeksis as crawlies were to Gelfling. SkekSil then laid a choice before the dejected Rian: pets, or enemies. Without a guarantee to stop draining Gelfling, Rian refused, only for skekSil to angrily shout that war would mean the death of the entire Gelfling race. Coming to a stop after Rian's defiant claim that they would win such a war, skekSil cut away Rian's bonds and invited Rian to leave, but that the fate of the Gelfling race would be on his head if he chose to run yet again. Bound by chains of his own making even as his physical bonds had been cut, Rian chose to stay within the carriage.

Aughra Song of Thra

Aughra tries to hear the song of Thra

Atop a Grot mountain, Aughra tried in vain to hear the "song of Thra" using several Mystic methodologies until a Darkened creature came before her and died in her hands. Beseeching the Sanctuary Tree for help, it cleansed the creature of Darkening and revived it. Taking meaning from it, Aughra decided to simply wait and listen rather than attempting to "make Thra talk".

Finally arriving in Ha'rar, Deet became fearful that she could not gain admittance to see the All-Maudra with her current garb. While Deet tried to think of other methods of entry, Hup stole a fancy dress for her, clothed her in it, and marched to the front gates. Addressing the guard as a "Brother Paladin" and insisting that the "Vapran Lady" had an important message for the All-Maudra, the guard quickly let Deet inside the citadel. Within the same citadel, the All-Maudra was meeting Lore and the Skeksis were hungrily inspecting their "volunteers".

Nearing the Castle of the Crystal, skekSil's carriage was ambushed by Gurjin and Naia, who pulled Rian from the carriage to its roof. SkekSil responded by stabbing his sword through the roof, forcing the Gelfling onto each "wheel" of the carriage, allowing them to release the Armaligs and ride them to safety while the carriage itself crashed. Meanwhile, Seladon noticed Deet in the castle and apprehended her, seeing through her disguise and demanding she tell her story about the Darkening immediately rather than to the All-Maudra, lest she be kicked out. Without options, Deet acquiesced and spoke to Seladon.

All the while, Aughra slowly began a chant in tune with the song of Thra, which she had finally began to hear, speaking in increasing rapidity as events unfolded. Seladon demanded proof from Deet, who began dreamfasting together to provide it, even as Brea and Mayrin dreamfasted so that Mayrin could learn how Brea discovered the hidden chamber beneath her throne. At that moment, Rian, Kylan, Gurjin, and Naia also began dreamfasting so that they could witness skekMal through Rian's eyes, and as everyone began dreamfasting at once, Aughra's chanting reached a crescendo.

Hup defends Deet from Seladon

Hup defends Deet while in a trance

After a flash of light, Aughra, Rian, Deet, Mayrin, Brea, Kylan, Gurjin, Naia, and Seladon all found themselves in the Dream Space, appearing as a misty facsimile of the Crystal Chamber in the Castle of the Crystal. There Aughra danced, delighted that she could hear the song of Thra and see the paths laid before her. She introduced everyone, and explained that though their bodies remained on Thra, the Dream Space was "the source of magic and prophecy". Continuing, Aughra said that The Crystal of Truth brought them there to ask for help to defeat the Skeksis, and at that point Seladon responded that such talk was treason, that they were "nothing without the Skeksis", and she urged her mother to "remember who you serve". When Mayrin said she served Thra, Seladon tried to convince her that this was merely a trick by Aughra, who then demanded to know if Seladon would heed Thra's call. Seladon only said she would not give in to "chaos", at which point Aughra ejected her from the Dream Space, causing Seladon to wake up and order guards stationed around Deet and Hup while she reported to the Skeksis. Deet however, was still in trance, and Hup attempted to protect and rouse her.

Continuing in the Dream Space, Aughra reassured Mayrin that she only send Seladon back, before having them all gather around the Crystal, which revealed to them all what the Skeksis were doing to the Gelfling. Following the revelation, Aughra tasked Rian with joining Brea, Deet, and Lore in Ha'rar, and to continue together to the Circle of the Suns. At Naia's questioning, Aughra tasks her, Gurjin, and Kylan with spreading news of the Skeksis' crimes to the other Gelfling Clans in order to kickstart the rebellion, with Mayrin already pledging Vapra to the cause. Satisfied, Aughra then closed the Dream Space, returning herself and everyone present to their bodies.

Mayrin dead

All-Maudra Mayrin lies dead

Mayrin and Brea rushed to confront the Skeksis over the volunteers, Brea telling Lore to remain behind, even as Seladon reported their treachery to skekVar and skekZok. Although skekZok welcomed her, neither he nor skekVar knew which princess she was, but they received her report readily enough and were prepared for Mayrin when she arrived with Brea, Deet, and Hup (the latter a newly minted paladin). Mayrin demanded the Skeksis release the "volunteers", but skekZok replied that they were not prisoners, but willing participants. Even so, as All-Maudra, Mayrin ordered the Skeksis to release them, launching into a tirade about not accepting Skeksis rule any longer. Enraged, skekVar replied by slicing Mayrin open, Seladon and Brea following her to the ground as she bled to death. Seladon blamed Brea for Mayrin's death, who then began sobbing into Mayrin's body as skekZok raised Seladon to her feet, comforting her and honoring her loyalty. Galvanized, and despite Brea attempting to reason with her, Seladon ordered Brea, Deet, and Hup taken into custody, to be passed to the Skeksis and taken to the Castle of the Crystal. SkekZok and skekVar then named Seladon All-Maudra.
