Legends of the Dark Crystal is an original manga series based in the world of The Dark Crystal. The story is a prequel, taking place during the Garthim War, 200 trine before the events of the original 1982 movie. It was decided early on to make the series a prequel rather than a sequel, as the ultimately unmade live-action sequel, The Power of the Dark Crystal, was then in pre-production and the writers did not want to "step on their toes".[1]

The first volume, entitled The Garthim Wars, was released in November 2007. Three volumes were originally expected, though it was decided to condense it into only two. The released date of the second manga was delayed for three years. According to Heidi Arnhold:
A couple years ago, there were a ton of layoffs at Tokyopop that had a negative effect on a lot of their projects. I honestly thought "Legends" was going to get cancelled altogether. The best compromise TP made was to wrap up the story in two volumes instead of three in order to save money. That's pretty much it! I'm just glad we got to finish.
The second and final volume titled Trial By Fire was released on August 2010.
