When I walked within the corridors of the magnificent tree, I could hear the footsteps of many tip-tapping against the wood. It sounded like the heartbeat of the tree itself.

Smerth-Staba (Modern Gelfling: Glennfoot Tree), also known as the Great Smerth, was a Great Tree that grew in Sog. It was characterized by its air-filled vasculature, in which members of the Drenchen Clan made their homes, and was said to have given origin to all the Apeknot Trees in the swamp.[1]

Like all the Great Trees, it had multiple, often contradictory origin stories. Some stories credited Aughra with having planted it, while the Drenchen themselves held to the narrative established by Ipsy and the Great Seed, in which it was planted by Maudra Ipsim Vlisabi-Nara, who was rewarded together with her followers by the Tree with the gift of gills.[2]

Its canopy was decorated with the hanging spearheads of fallen hunters,[3] and Blindfish fisheries were maintained at its base.[4]

Throughout the Age of Division, Smerth-Staba, together with the other Great Trees, struggled to hold the Darkening at bay, but began to falter once the Skeksis began draining Gelfling of their essence.[5]
