The Endless Forest was a vast woodland located in the Skarith basin[2] and bisected by the Black River.[3] It covered more of Thra than any other named region, and was the planet's most biologically diverse area.[4]

Though rich in stone and wood, the Endless Forest was poor in metals,[5] and was considered one of the most dangerous regions of Thra,[1] prompting many of its plants and animals to develop defensive poisons, which were advertised through bright colors and threatening vocalizations.[6]

The Forest was the original homeland of the Podlings,[7] and was later colonized by the Stonewood Clan, the majority of whom's members resided in Stone-in-the-Wood, located near a lake deep within the Forest.[2] The Castle of the Crystal was located at its edge.[3]

Ecology[]

Fauna[]

Fizzgig pack

Fizzgigs were native to the Forest, and served as the sigil animal of the Stonewood Clan

Flora[]

Thrushpog

Thrushpogs were a common member of the Endless Forest's flora

The Forest was kept alive by Seedles, large, lumbering creatures who, upon reaching adulthood, would root themselves to the ground and regenerate the land with new trees.[32]

The Forest provided an abundance of fruit, including peachberries and Bluemouth Fruit.[1] The fruit of the Arara Tree was especially sought after by Stonewood apothecaries.[6]

The Forest was also home to Olyeka-Staba, one of the Great Trees and patron to the Stonewood Clan. It was said to have given rise to all the trees in the Forest, hearing and feeling everything heard and felt within it. As such, the Stonewood Gelfling would frequently visit the tree in order to check it for illness in order to anticipate future sickness in the Endless Forest itself.[33]

It was home to vast colonies of Thrushpogs, which extended to the Spriton Plains, thus reminding the Gelfling that all creatures were one, regardless of boundaries.[34] Some sections of the forest floor were infested with clusters of Gobbles, which could reduce an animal to bone in seconds.[35]

Behind the Scenes[]

In the Dark Crystal Author Quest press release[36] and J.M. Lee's young adult novel series, the forest is referred to as "Dark Wood".
