One cannot remain still in such a place, nor can one become complacent.
The Crystal Desert was a desert in Skarith, located beyond the northwestern perimeter of the Endless Forest. Its northern edge was lined by the Claw Mountains, which were among the only natural source of shade in the area.[1]
Its sands never stopped shifting, and walking over them was likened to traversing water.[2] It was frequently beset by sandstorms[3] and lightning storms. Days were hot and nights unbearably cold.[4] Any moisture landing on the ground would evaporate on contact with the ground during the day,[1] thus late evening was the ideal time to gather water.[4]
It was home to the Dousan Clan.

Flora[]
The dunes were home to reedy plants which could easily be mistaken for rock formations during the day, but which bloomed at night, providing food to insects, birds and other desert fauna.[4] The pollen and other substances of some indigenous plants was used by the Dousan to make ink for their tattoos.[14] Urdrupes grew in the Circle of the Suns, and were used by Dousan shamans to commune with Thra.[3]
Oszah-Staba, the patron tree of the Dousan Clan, grew in the Wellspring, and provided the Dousan with lightning repellant fluid, as well as bark for incense.[15]
Behind the Scenes[]
In The Dark Crystal Author Quest press release[16] and J.M. Lee's young adult novel series, the desert is referred to as the "Crystal Sea".
