Crystal bats work in harmony with the Garthim. They fly all over Thra spying out stray Gelfling. They carry a purple crystal that "reports" what they see to the main Crystal in the castle. If you are seen by a crystal bat, it's a sure thing that the Garthim will soon be where you are. Although they have batlike wings, the resemblance to Earth bats ends there. They have a grub-like body and antennae. They transmit their data via a series of buzzes. They don't appear to have any faces. Instead of folding their wings, they simply hang by the tips of their wings while at rest, in an upright position.
While Kira and Jen were in the boat, they spotted a crystal bat, which Kira knocked out of the sky with a single shot from her sling. This, unfortunately, did not kill the creature, as it was still able to aright itself in the shallow water of the shore to continue its transmission of their location.
