O black and shining river
Night within the day of the wood
Wherever round you wander
Life rises from you, green and good

The Black River was a vast watercourse which originated in the mountains of Grot, flowed through the Endless Forest and emptied into the Silver Sea.[2] It was named after the color of its water, which was naturally black rather than being colored by sediment.[3]
Because of its position and slow flowing waters, the Black River was an important trade route to the Gelfling, who would use it to ship goods to the port of Ha'rar in the north. Its banks were even and clear, and were thus easy to navigate for novice boatmen.[2]
The River was of particular importance to the Stonewood Clan, as it provided them with plentiful drinking water and served as habitat for wildlife. As such, it was the frequent subject of numerous song and odes.[2]
