Armaligs were burrowing creatures related to Nurlocs. The common variety was originally native to the root networks of the Endless Forest, where they formed large colonies,[1] while a dwarf variant inhabited the caves of Grot.[3]

Common Armaligs were domesticated during the Age of Division by the Skeksis to act as wheels to their carriages, which they could propel at great speeds,[1] while the dwarf variety was hunted as a food source by the Grottan Clan.[3] Wild Armaligs suffered a great decline throughout this period, with Thriya noting that Grottan dwarf Armaligs were becoming scarce,[3] and wild common Armaligs had been largely driven to extinction in the trine leading up to the Garthim War.[1]

The paladin, Barfinnious, and his squire, Hup, rode an armalig known as Marengax.[4]
